Why Do I Need To Floss?

Every six months, when you visit the dentist for a cleaning, you probably get a little lecture on the importance of flossing. We know, flossing can be a chore, but do you know why we highly recommend flossing?

Unlike a toothbrush, which cleans the tops and outer surfaces of the teeth and gums, floss is an interdental cleaner - designed to clean the tight spaces between teeth (places where a toothbrush can't reach).

When you don't floss, you increase your risk of gingivitis and cavities (due to plaque build up in-between teeth). According to Clinical Microbiology Reviews, there are over 1,000 bacteria in dental plaque. These bacteria can irritate the gum tissue, causing it to become red and inflamed and bleed easily, which breeds more bacteria and causes gingivitis to occur.
