What is TMJ?

Temporomandibular joints, called TMJ’s are the jaw joints located in front of your ears. They act like hinges connecting the upper and lower jaws. They are complicated joints since they pivot (rotate) as well as slide (translate), allowing us to open wide as well as move the lower jaw right and left. Any condition causing pain, damage or instability of the TMJ’s is called TMD (temporomandibular disorder). Surprisingly, for how common TMD is, not many people realize that it is the cause of their daily headaches!

Interestingly, temporomandibular disorders (TMD’s) are 7 times more common in females than in males. And only 3% of all TMD’s are caused by problems with the joint itself while 97% are caused by muscle spasm or bite misalignment, and are therefore very treatable.

At Neo Dental we want to help. If you are a chronic headache sufferer, we may have a permanent solution for you. The relief is almost immediate, and for many, permanent. No surgery. No discomfort. No freezing, and often no night guard required. Ask us how.

Complete our TMD self-assessment below.

With your mouth slightly open, tip your head back so that your nose is pointing toward the ceiling.

Completely relax your jaws.

Slowly close your teeth so they touch as lightly as possible, and tap them very lightly together. Which teeth touch first? Ideally, all upper and lower teeth should touch simultaneously. If the back teeth, front teeth, or one side touch first, it is likely that your bite is misaligned and causing TMD.
