According to the American Dental Association, one of the first areas to decline when your diet isn't ideal is your teeth. To help educate our patients, we compiled this list of healthy foods that are great for your teeth. So bon appétit!
Cheese: If you love cheese like we do, you'll love the study published by the American Academy of General Dentistry in May/June 2013. According to the study, eating cheese raises the pH level in a person's mouth, reducing the risk of tooth decay.
Leafy Greens: Leafy greens are so good for your overall health, it's not a surprise that they works wonders for your oral health as well. Veggies such as kale and spinach are high in calcium and folic acid, which builds your enamel and can even treat gum disease in pregnant women!
Apples: While most dentists would recommend staying away from sweet foods, apples are the exception. Apples are high in finer and water, which helps produce saliva in your mouth, rinsing away bacteria and food particles.
Yoghurt: Similiar to cheese, yoghurt is high in calcium and protein (ultimately strengthening your teeth). Also, the probiotics found in yoghurt forces out bacteria that causes cavities.
Celery: While the old wives' tale that celery is negative calories isn't true, celery is really great for your teeth. First of all, celery acts like a toothbrush - scraping away food particles and bacteria. Secondly, it is a good source of vitamin a & c - giving your gums an extra boost!
Water: And of course water is awesome for you and your smile! Water helps wash away food debris and keeps your saliva levels high (preventing gum disease). So be sure to drink your recommended daily dose!
