Eating Well: The Worst Foods For Your Smile

In our last blog we explored foods that are great for your smile, so this week we thought we would explore foods that have negative effects on your mouth. But don't let this list scare you - we believe that even your favourite candies are okay in moderation!

 

 

Hard Candy:

While hard candies may seem harmless,  constant exposure to sugar can be harmful to your teeth. Also, the hard nature of the treat can cause a broken or chipped tooth. We suggest sugarless gum as an alternative. 

 

(Chewing on) Ice Cubes:

As mentioned above, chewing on hard substances can leave your teeth vulnerable to a dental emergency and damage enamel. 

 

Coffee/Tea:

In their natural form, coffee and tea can be healthy beverage choices. Unfortunately too many people can’t resist adding sugar. Also, coffee and tea can dry out your mouth and stain your teeth. So if you do consume, be sure to drink plenty of water and try to keep the add-ons to a minimum.

 

Sticky Foods e.g. Dried Fruit:

Sticky foods can damage your smile since they tend to stay on the teeth longer than other types of food. If you find yourself eating dried fruits or trail mix often, make sure to rinse with water after and to brush and floss carefully.

 

Crunchy Foods:

Crunchy foods like potato chips are filled with starch that often becomes trapped in your teeth. So if you do indulge, be sure to floss afterwards.

 

Soda & Sports Drinks:

Most people know that carbonated soft drinks (including diet soda) are bad for your teeth due to the acidity and high amounts of sugar. But did you know that sport drinks/energy drinks are also bad for your smile? There is so much sugar in these drinks that the American Academy of Paediatrics said, "sports drinks can be helpful for young athletes in prolonged, vigorous physical activities, but unnecessary in most cases." So needless to say, we suggest water when you're feeling thirsty!

 

Alcohol:

Once again, we are not saying to skip everything on this list, but we do suggest moderation. Alcohol is on this list because it causes dehydration and dry mouth. People who drink excessively may find their saliva flow reduced over time, which can lead to tooth decay and other oral infections like gum disease.
