Good Oral Health At Any Age

It goes without saying that good oral health is important for Canadians of all ages. However, depending on your age, your oral health needs may change so we thought we would provide advice on how to best take care of your teeth, whatever age you are.

Babies:

Even before your baby sports his or her first tooth, it is important to wipe his or her gums with gauze or a soft wet washcloth. As the teeth emerge (around 6 months), start brushing your child's mouth twice a day with a baby toothbrush and a small amount of toothpaste.

Within six months of the first tooth, or around 1 year of age, we suggest your child visits the dentist.

Children:

As your child ages, he or she may want to brush their own teeth. Be sure to watch their routine to ensure they are brushing correctly. A sign that they are not brushing properly is swollen gums and white film over their teeth (plaque). It is also important to note that a child should use a child-sized toothbrush, which can be purchased at any drugstore.

Adults:

We simply suggest brushing twice a day, flossing once a day and visiting the dentist every 6 months (or sooner if needed).

Seniors:

As you get older, your oral health needs may change. If you need advice on looking after your teeth and gums, or those of a dependent relative or friend, your dentist and the Canadian Dental Association can provide you with valuable information. We still suggest brushing and flossing the same amount as an adult, but dentist visits may need to occur more frequently.

If you have dentures, we suggest cleaning them everyday as plaque and tartar can build up on false teeth. We would also advise taking them out every night to soak. It is also important to brush your natural teeth and gums carefully with a soft toothbrush.
